Many many years ago, when the Amatherian civilization was in its golden age the land was prosperous and well populated. But it was brought down and all but destroyed by powerful wizard’s lust for power. The wizard, named Zed, was convinced that he was destined to be a god. He gathered followers, including several local rulers and had a fantastic tower built for himself. There he studied dark rituals, seeking to gain immortality through necromancy. He meant to rule as an all-powerful deity, and subjugate those who refused to follow him by raising them as undead slaves. He bonded his tower to the Shadow Realm and created a nexus of dark energy which he used to summon an undead army. The Amatherian people rallied against him, and were able to defeat Zed’s army. They destroyed his body and banished his spirit to the Shadow Realm, closing the link between worlds by bringing down the tower. His lieutenants were defeated and entombed in their own fortresses. Unfortunately the war cost the Amatherian’s terrible losses and nearly devastated the land. The few survivors left their formerly great civilization to rot in ruin.
