Thursday Night D&D
Starbane was a necromancer and one of Zed‘s Minions He was primarily responsible for creating the undead hordes that made up Zed’s army. His lair was built into the top of Prince’s Peak. He built an observatory at the top of the peak where his artifact, The Eye of the Night, could be used to view the beams from the Necroshine beacons.
Starbane’s research was primarily focused on shadow and necrotic magic. He was the one who created the Necroshine beacons and harnessed their energy to materialize Zed’s tower. Each beacon, when lit, binds a portion of the Tower of Endless Night to the material world. Starbane indicated that it was Graven who actually discovered the Necroshine, and that was where all of his knowledge on the subject came from. Starbane built and installed the beacons and set them up to focus on the central tower. The beacons and their strange power were each tied to the minion guarding them and all were tied to Zed’s life-force. The beacons can only be turned off by banishing Zed, and can only be destroyed by permanently destroying Zed’s life-force.
Starbane was also the one who perfected the ritual to open the gate between the Shadow Realm and the material plane. A partial record of the ritual is included, as well as some precautions. It points out that the critical point of the ritual is the moment when the gate is open and the tower exists fully in both planes. That is when Zed’s shadow spirit will be able to cross over and begin to materialize here, but the gate must be closed immediately since the spirit will be vulnerable to true destruction while the connection is still in place. Care must be taken to give Zed time to reform because once he does his spirit will be safe from destruction on this plane.
